A Certain Slant of Light

a multi-media performance created as part of eˉlektron.art “fruitful misunderstandings” global online residency and presented in eˉlektron’s 2021 “Festival of Spooky Action at a Distance”

dancer, creative technologist, mixed media artist

Allison co-created the performance piece A Certain Slant of Light with Feli Navarro and Siya Umlilo Ngcobo as part of eˉlektron.art’s “fruitful misunderstandings” 2021 residency “MANIFESTO” and performed at the 2021 “Festival of Spooky Action at a Distance”.

“A Certain Slant of Light” illuminates the process of exploring connectivity across the multidimensional spaces we inhabit. How do we breathe, move, and share together? How can we be present in our bodies in the outdoor world, indoor world, and virtual world? This performance is part of a ritual for connecting and generating intimacy despite the distance and differences that separate us. By being present you contribute to the ritual – nothing is wrong or right, simply the state of being, of breathing, generates a power, a light.

eˉlektron hosts the global online residency “fruitful misunderstandings” for art professionals. Aimed at exploring the potentials of the medium of an online performance, both in its singularity and in its role in the individual artistic practices. The 2021 edition of “fruitful misunderstandings” is entitled “MANIFESTO”:

“Each day we wake up in a new world. The very idea of certainty seems to have turned into irony. While it might feel like surrealists have already exhausted the power of words to manifest this state of being, we believe we can still have a say. A say in what we intend to make of today. A say which does not necessarily ask for words. A say to perform. A say to explore. Together.”

6 art professionals were selected through an open call to join us in this exploration during the month of February 2021. The artists formed 2 temporary collectives in which they develop together their own manifestos in the form of an online performance while taking into account a broader audience experience. The final results of both collectives will be a part of an online stage of the International Performing Arts Festival of Spooky Action at a Distance in the beginning of April 2021.

The residents are mentored by Taavi Suisalu, Vera Iona Papadopoulou, Armando Rotondi and eˉlektron team.

Residents: Allison Costa (New York), Dorin Cucicov (Bucharest), Feli Navarro (Cádiz), Grigoriy Sergeev (Saint Petersburg), Siya Umlilo Ngcobo (Johannesburg),  Lori Hepner (Pittsburgh)
